Lombok Island in 360°

Last month, idVR360 got a great opportunity to travel to Lombok Island for 12 days. Collaborating with www.indonesiavirtual.com, we are assigned to capture some VR360° at many possible tourism spots.

Once we’re back in Jakarta, we started processing the frames and end up with 89 VR360°. We will share some of them here, but  the rest of the VR360°s are available at our other online portfolio page at 360cities.

Click on the image to view the interactive VR360° in a new window/tab.

This one is a panorama of a traditional Sasak tribe village in Senaru area. Sasak is the original inhabitant of Lombok Island.

At another village, I was allowed to shoot inside their house. I convert the final result to black & white version.

One amongst many other highlights at Lombok is Mount Rinjani with 3726 meter above sea level at its summit. Rinjani is an active volcano, and at the altitude of approximately 2000 meter above sea level, there is a vast Segara Anak Lake as its caldera. We took a panorama from Senaru Rim at 2650 meter above sea level, but unfortunately a thick cloud is blocking the view of the summit which located just below the sun.

Lombok also known for its small islands with crystal clear sea water and white sandy beach, located around the main island.  These two below are panorama from Gili Sudak and Gili Nanggu.

The more popular gilis are Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. Not like the above gilis, these gilis has more lodging & cafes with various entertainment. These are panoramas from those three gilis.

Using Google Earth application? You may want to try activating 360Cities photo layer and start looking for the red dots on Lombok Island….well some of the red dots belong to somebody else, but I can assure you that more than 70 red dots are ours.

Hope you will enjoy our Lombok 360° panoramas!

Technical details
All panoramas were shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II with EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM Fisheye lens, and of course using a tripod with Nodal Ninja 5 panoramic head or a Nodal Ninja Fanotec Pole Series 1 combined with Ultimate R1 panoramic head

Canon Photo Marathon Indonesia 2011

As part of Canon Photo Marathon Asia 2011, this event is one of the biggest photo competition event in Indonesia. Other participating countries are Singapore, India, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

Canon Photo Marathon Indonesia 2011 took place in Yogyakarta (September 24th) and Jakarta (October 1st), and we are attending the Jakarta event. Managed by PT Datascrip as an exclusive distributor of Canon camera products, claimed that more than 3000 photographer, both from Yogyakarta and Jakarta, participated in this event . Besides photo competition, there are also some photography workshops conducted by professional photographers in Indonesia. Winners of the photo competition will receive, of course, Canon cameras, and tickets to Photo Clinic to Tasmania, Australia.

During the event, we managed to shots some pole panoramas at the location, which is Ancol Eco Park. This place is amazingly huge, even with 2500+ participants wandering around to get their best shots for the competition, there are still many areas un-explored by them. Below is 10 panoramas (out of 18) that we took using a 9 feet pole to get a ‘different perspective’ of the event.

The rest of the panoramas are also available at our other online portfolio at 360cities.

Java Rockin’land 2011 in 360°

Java Rockin’land is one amongst several music festival in Indonesia, organized by PT. Java Festival Production (founded by Peter Gontha). Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival and Jakarta International Java Soulnation are the other two renowned festivals held by the company.

For rock music enthusiast, JRL Festival is one event that you surely don’t want to skip! Held in the course of 3 days, the event was reportedly packed with so many people. Day 1 was accounted by over 10.000 visitors! Don’t have an actual number over Day 2 & 3, but Dewi Gontha, as the Producer of the event, targeted 60.000 visitors for the whole event.

Local & Internatinal rock band were listed, such as PAS band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Edane, God Bless, Ed Kowalczyk of LIVE, The Cranberries, Edane, Good Charlotte, Helloween, and a lot more of it!

We attend the event only at Day 2, and made some 360° panoramic shots of the concert. Power Slaves, Konspirasi, Kunci, God Bless, G-Pluck Beatles are some of the bands that we’ve had capture quite successfully. Unfortunately its not our luck to get a good capture during Ed Kowalczyk and The Cranberris performance.

One thing that we love about this event: visitors are allowed to bring DSLR’s! Even our 3m telescopic pole for creating 360° panorama was cleared!

Well, enjoy the VR 360° of one of the biggest rock music festival in Southeast Asia!

Technical information about 360° photos:
We use Nodal Ninja Fanotec Pole Series 1 to elevate the camera up to 9 feet (approx. 3 meters) high, combined with Nodal Ninja Ultimate R1 panoramic head to hold a circular fisheye lens attached to a full frame camera system.
The real challenge was when the night falls, it was pitch dark! Very high ISO settings was used, so even after noise reduction during post-processing, image noise still visible at some of the 360° photos, particularly ones that taken during night performances. We’ll do better next time!

360° VR Panorama at 9′ high

A panorama taken at this height brings a lot of new challenges within the process, especially during capturing each frame. We need to familiarize with the pole which was constantly swinging.

This is our first panoramas taken with Nodal Ninja Fanotec Pole Series 1 combined with Ultimate R1 panoramic head.

The pole was extended to its maximum length at 9′ (approx. 2,75 meters). At the top of the pole is the R1 head (tilted at +5° to get a good zenith coverage) holding Sigma 8mm f3.5 Circular Fish Eye attached to Canon 5D Mark II.

We will surely make many of pole panorama just like this one!
